Shown in the photos below is a custom VR Forged D09 in a Satin Bronze finish with a center lock-inspired center cap. Since this is a custom wheel, the customer opted for an aggressive but excellent fitment. We started by lowing the car with a set of H&R VTF Adjustable Lowering Springs. We lowered this car by about 1.25″ all around. The springs allow for 1.75″ of lowering up front and about 1.8″ out back. So, there is room to make this an even more aggressive fitment, but we don’t want to smoke that fresh RW Carbon Front Lip Spoiler just yet.

2.) HKS Legamax Sports Exhaust 4BA-GZEA14H 2023+

Of course, HKS is going to show up for Toyota’s GR Corolla. When I say show up, they made a damn beautiful exhaust kit! In typical HKS fashion, the Japanese legends brought some magical JDM engineering into the conversation. With this kit, you get their “Exhaust Error Canceller,” and what that does is squash any error code that may triggered by not having any active valves. HKS opted for a dual-tip construction instead of the three-tip OEM design. This left room for some styling by adding a branded HKS bracket that is placed just insight of where the OEM center tip would be placed.

3.) Remark Catback Exhaust Elite Spec Quad Tip

Coming in with the added tip is Remark with their TITANIUM QUAD TIP Elite Spec exhaust kit for the GR Corolla. I’m not sure if there was some extra spice up-stream of this exhaust on their test car, but this exhaust sounds absolutely incredible! Sizing up to 3″ diameter and 4″ tips seems to really open this system up. We can also appreciate this kit utilizing the stock valves from Toyota.

Something to note from Remark – “*You will be using factory donut gasket and spring-bolts where connects to factory OEM piping.”

35″ Tensor Desert Series Race Tires + VR Forged D15 Beadlocks (Swoon)

I think we can all agree that when we see a UTV on a trailer with Tensor DSRs, Regulators, BFG Projects, or any large Baja-proven race tires, it gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Something about the stance of a UTV or truck with race tires makes us want to turn up some Metallica and do some off-road thrashing. We got to mount up some 35×15 10 Tensor DSR (Desert Series Race) tires to a set of gorgeous VR Forged D15 (5-lug) forged beadlocks. If you aren’t familiar, these D15 Beadlocks by VR Forged are some serious race-proven forged wheels that not only bada** looking, but save a substantial amount of weight. Each wheel weighs in at about 20.7 lbs, but we’ll call it 9.4 kg because we’re MWW. (Motorsports Weight Weenies)

Getting to take this Polaris RZR Pro R out to the desert to hoon and put this wheel and tire package to the test was amazing to say the least. These tires alone compared to the stock rubbers is a night and day difference. The driver characteristics are so positive and can truly feel the energy and capabilities of the machine. Not in a cheesy-sappy way but the assurance of agility and being able to dive into different directions or carve ruts confidently. As for the wheels, the VR Forged D15s really bring everything home with saving weight from adding the big ol’ tires and knowing when SNAFU happens, you have some forged wheels that will still be able to get you home.

Tensor Tires

In 2009, when Toyota brought the FT-86 Concept to the masses, it was a bit underwhelming. Originally thought to be a new V6 hybrid Electric All-Wheel Drive platform, as hinted by the FT-HS, the naturally aspirated low power front mounted boxer engine and rear wheel drive layout disappointed many, but sent a spark throughout the touge when it was announced that it would be a continuation of the legendary AE-86.

If you have spent any amount of time in the U.S. Import car scene, you’re no stranger to the AE-86. On paper, it’s nothing special, but Toyota’s focus on balance catapulted this car to the forefront of an automotive revolution and saw mass success on trace tracks across the world for over 30 years. Then they quit. It wasn’t until 2013 that we would get the ZN6 (Toyota) and ZC6 (Subaru) chassis to reignite the revolution of the late 80’s. The success of which brought us to the car we are talking about today, the ZN8 (Toyota) and ZD8 (Subaru) GR-86. The 2022 model year GR-86 (BR-Z) changed the game during a time where the game absolutely needed changing. With an MSRP of under $30,000 usd, the GR-86 (BR-Z) was arguably one of the best looking new sports cars on the market and was relatively immune to mass mark-ups we were seeing across the country. With Ken Gushi and Jhonnattan Castro pushing the limits of the chassis on track, they sold like hotcakes to a crowd of young enthusiasts. However, Toyota missed the mark in a few places to solidify the GR-86’s (BR-Z) legend status, but a lot of aftermarket companies stepped in to filled the gap. So here are the Top 8 Performance Modifications for the GR-86 (BR-Z).

#1. HKS GT2 Supercharger Pro Kit

So with the GR-86 (BR-Z), the elephant in the room is actually not in the room at all, and that elephant is power. The 2.4 liter FA24D boxer in the GR-86 (BR-Z) makes an astounding 228 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque, which is an approximate 10% increase over the previous model, but not nearly enough to keep up with its domestic counterparts. HKS, as usual, has a answer for Toyota’s power shortcomings and the answer is the HKS GT2 Supercharger Pro Kit. Unlike most aftermarket forced induction kits, HKS has designed the GT2 to utilize the factory air box keeping the intake air temps low and the noise even lower while producing nearly 300whp.

#2. GruppeM Ram Air System

If the drawbacks of forced induction are not something that interest you, one of the best ways to make power out of the factory GR-86 (BR-Z) FA24D is via the GruppeM Ram Air Intake System. Made of 100% hand laid carbon fiber, this intake wicks away heat faster than the factory intake and utilizes a GruppeM specific ram air system to bring in ambient air from the factory grille. With simple bolt-on installation, this is one of the best ways to increase power across the rev range.

#3. Cusco Rear Differential Cover

Typically when we hear of upgraded covers, we don’t necessarily associate it with performance as it simply covers the parts doing real work. This is not the case with the Cusco Differential Cover. The factory differential of the GR-86 (BR-Z) has been shown to stand up to a good amount of abuse in stock form, however if you intend to increase the power output of your GR-86(BR-Z), it is imperative that you increase the driveling cooling capability as well. With provisions for external fluid coolers, the Cusco Differential Cover adds an additional 500cc (.5 liters) of fluid capacity, features revised cooling fin design, and is made of billet aluminum, making it an upgrade over factory in every way. Whether you’re drifting or tearing up the road course, the benefits of the Cusco Differential Cover are well worth the cost.

#4. REMARK Titanium R1-Spec Catback

Let’s be real, the dual tips on the GR-86 (BR-Z) are primarily for aesthetics. While REMARK offers their Elite Spec Cat-back, Sports Touring Cat-back, and Sport Cat-back for those that wish the maintain the factory twin exhaust, they stuck to their guns and went full race car with the Titanium R1-Spec Cat-back Exhaust for the GR-86 (BR-Z). Featuring a full 2.5” run, the titanium system is designed to optimize the scavenging effects of factory and advance aftermarket headers before offering a straight shot out the rear through their 4.5 inch slant cut burnt titanium tip. While the REMARK Titanium R1-Spec Cat-back is one of the loudest exhausts on the market for the Subaru and Toyota platforms, it does so while maintaining a full bodied tone. The REMARK Titanium R1-Spec Cat-back is also the ultimate exhaust if you’re looking to see some flames from the back of your GR-86 (BR-Z).

#5. A’PEXi N1 Evolution Damper Coilovers

Toyota did a really good job of keeping body roll and the dynamic factory dampening toeing the line between daily driver and race car. However, this came at a price, a price which keeps it from reaching the esteemed JDM Legend Status. However, after mapping countless laps and road miles with the likes of Maaya Orido and Hana Burton, A’PEXi released a coilover that is completely incomparable to others on the market. A far cry from the more common N1 Type ExV, the N1 EVO was designed to be dependable, rebuildable, and without compromise. That being said, each set is custom, made to order, specifically to the demands and driving discipline of the customer, but the most basic features are a true 25-way dampening adjustment, huge lightweight monotube with a 46mm diameter piston, adjustable lower body to keep pre-load consistent, and a 65mm ID spring. Constructed in Japan, but rebuildable in Orange County, California, there’s no better coilover on the market for the GR-86.

#6. Project Mu M1 Front and Rear Brake Pads

Big brake kits are often the standardized go-to for brake upgrades, but with the GR-86, it’s hardly necessary. The ultimate upgrade for a street driven GR-86 (BR-Z) is actually one of the most affordable. The Project Mu B Force Compound is the result of over 40 years of braking compound development that gives all the benefit of a competent race pad, without the harsh counter effects on the rotors. While heat and brake fade will always be synonymous with one another, Project Mu B Force Compound brake pads are shown to outlast and outperform the factory pads utilizing the factory fluid. However, if you truly want to do hotlap after hotlap and drive you GR-86 (BR-Z) home, Project Mu has designed their G-Four 335 brake fluid to stand up to the abuse. If you’re looking for something just as good, but more readily available, I also recommend Motul DOT 5.1 brake fluid.

#7. ADRO USA Widebody Kit w/ Diffuser

While the GR-86 (BR-Z) is one of the best looking cars to come out of Toyota since the 90’s , they kept it relatively mild. While the TOM’S body kit took everyone by storm at SEMA 2023, there was another GR-86 that was all but subtle. ADRO’s GR-86 Widebody kit is one of the highest quality, most complete kits on the market. In true ADRO fashion, this body kit didn’t redesign the wheel, they broadened and perfected it. Improving on the factory curves and induction scoops, ADRO’s design is the cherry on top of a design that is truly timeless. All in hand, the GR-86 (BR-Z) is a legend in the making, but it wont get there without your vision and the highest quality parts. Whether you want to drift Ebisu or grip Fuji, the key to solidifying legend status with the GR-86 is quality parts, quality style, and top tier performance.

Between Drift Tax, Social Media Influencers, and the great import apocalypse, reasonably priced JDM legend cars have become a thing of the past. This leaves prospective enthusiasts to look into less praised platforms to try to find their diamond-in-the-rough, and ultimately the car they will use to cultivate their entire automotive persona, but fret not, the JDM market is full of underrated underdogs that have the potential to catapult you into the illusive 10’s, look tasty on bags, or induce oversteer so snappy that spiral parking ramps will tremble at the very sound of your $100 welded diff. Today we will explore 5 Underrated JDM Platforms to modify… in reverse order. 

5. Subaru Forester

The Subaru community has earned the distinction of being one of the most loyal to their platform. Despite headgasket failures, equal-length debates, and industry leading depreciation, Subaru’s bang for its buck can not be overlooked. Often equipped with turbochargers, all-wheel drive, and manual transmissions Subaru is an obvious choice for many, but when we look past the veil of the STi, one model stands above the rest. The Subaru Forester, specifically the SF, SG, and SJ chassis, offers practicality and modularity in a way that has escaped modern commuters. In terms of practicality, this Forester is the ultimate budget camper, friend hauler, and parts hauler thanks largely to it’s wagon. However, where the magic happens… or could happen is right between the headlights. From the factory, these cars came with quite a few engine options, most notably the EJ20T for the SF and SG and the gangster EE20T in the SJ. When paired with one of Subaru’s many 5 speed manual transmissions, this translates to roughly 170 to 230 horsepower making it’s way to the pavement by way of all four tires, and with the right inputs and modifications, that’s fun. Personally, My SG would feature the EJ20T and I’d match it with the full CUSCO Chassis Reinforcement suite and sway bars and bring it down to my level on a set of KSport Kontrol Pro Coilovers. To get the most induction noise possible, I would add a Perrin Cold Air Intake, a Perrin Equal Length header, and an Invidia G200 cat back. To ensure we get the power to the wheels, I would run a McLeod Street Elite Clutch Kit and call it a build, but there’s so much more to do to make your Forester yours.

4. Mazda RX-8

What’s an Iori blog without mentioning Mazda. While I could easily mention one of the 4 generations of Miata, it’s been done. Most of the generations of the RX-7 are quickly becoming unobtanium, so that’s not fair. And despite their development of their new Turbo Inline 6 cylinder engine, Mazda has fallen out of automotive performance grace. However, before the tomb was sealed, Mazda gave us the controversial RX8. While the Renesis didn’t do much in terms of elevating the rotary design, it did serve as both the RX8’s gift and it’s curse. Industry leading engine failures has catapulted the RX8 to Maserati levels of depreciation, meaning a solid running example could be purchased and road worthy for under $5,000. However, the power plant isn’t as important as the RX8 versatility as a high performance motorsport chassis. Truly a car that can be built for any discipline, while boasting the engine bay real estate for JZ, LS, and REW swaps, the RX-8 will forever be tuner car royalty and it’s flexibility is the key of that claim. All swaps aside, my series II RX-8 would breath in through a TAKEDA Retain Stage-2 Pro Dry Intake and out through the A’PEXi Hybrid Mega Evo Catback for maximum flames, but no drone. I would ditch the factory bumpers for the Vertex Lang Full Body Kit, lower it on Tanabe Sustec Pro CR Coilovers, and having performing as well as it looks with a VR Tuned ECU Flash to give my FD3S a run for it’s money. Of course it would be painted Phantom Blue Mica. What about yours?

3. Lexus IS-300

Known by it’s JDM surname, the Altezza, when debuted in Japan October 1998 and announced for release the following year in the United States, was destined to be a low key classic. Picked up by the development team of Need For Speed Underground 2, we got a first glimpse into what the Altezza was capable of. As the 2JZ-GTE dominated the import scene, it’s milder sibling, the 2JZ-GE which powered the IS-300 was vibing in the background waiting for its day in the limelight. Well, that day is finally here. Easily one of the most underrated drift chassis in rotation today, the 1st Gen IS-300 (XE-10) produces enough torque to slide the rear around most grassroots corners and is easily improved upon without breaking the bank. Often called the Honda Civic of the Toyota realm, its simple lines and mass production numbers makes the IS-300 an easy choice for any list of underrated performers. Obviously, my Altezza’s 2JZ-GE would get the full Turbosmart treatment with a splash of Deatschwerks to put me at about 300ftlbs of torque, Endless SS-M Sport brake pads to slow me down, APEXi N1 Type EVX Coilovers to keep me down, and an APEXi WS2 Cat-back to keep the neighbors happy. Before you ask, yes, I would cut the knuckles and retrofit a AgencyPower Handbrake for science.

2. Lexus SC300/SC400

No car fits the monicker of budget Supra better than the SC300/SC400. Similar chassis to the MK-4 Supra, the SC features two very capable power plant options, a luxurious interior, and a resale value so low it’s disrespectful. However, that works in our favor. Available with a big torque V8, but handicapped by its slush box automatic transmission, the SC400 and it’s 1UZ produce an engine note like no other and makes enough power to do just about whatever you would need the car to do. On the other hand, the SC300 is arguably one of the most versatile of the SC platform as it is powered by a 2JZ-GE inline 6 engine that’s begging for forced induction and features manual transmission options. Pair this with the leather interior, digital cluster, and menacing factory stance, you have a car that do VIP or Stance, Drag or Drift, and do it all very well. As for me, I can think of no better use for the budget Supra than holding angle in drift form. That’s why I’d do a body roll delete utilizing Revel Touring Sport Damper Coilovers, support a degree or two of positive rear camber with the Powerhouse Racing Adjustable Rear Control Arms, and keep it classy with he Revel Medallion Touring S Catback Exhaust System. And yes, I would definitely be running a Borg-Warner Pre-Catalytic Converter Muffler (Turbocharger).

1. 1992-2000 Honda Civic

I couldn’t think of a more controversial underrated number one than the 5th and 6th Generation Honda Civic. I know it’s hard to call something underrated when it has the distinction of being one of the most widely modified platforms in history, but hear me out. The late 80’s to 2000 was the Honda Civic’s golden era. Accompanied by the Acura Integra, once these cars hit the used market, the term Lego cars was coined and we began seeing swaps that utilize almost every letter of the alphabet. From B-Series to H2B to Frankenstein D’s to super uncommon ZC swap, you can put almost any Honda power plant in the EG and EK civics without much modification. You can even make them All-Wheel Drive with minimal effort. This and the classic look of the EG and EK Honda Civics, earn my top vote for most underrated Tuner Car. While I don’t have one myself, an EM1 with a H2B (H series Engine, B series transmission), a Garrett G-Series, and a Single Bride GIAS III KING pilot seat, propelled by all 4 wheels is what it would look like if I did. Every forum made on every car ever will tell you the key to long engine life is cooling. We start with full aluminum radiators, add oil coolers, and sometimes even power steering coolers! But seldom do you really hear people talk about fuel cooling. Well today we got you covered!

Why Fuel Coolers in Engine is Important? 

Fuel coolers have been the main ingredient for success with a lot of tuners and serious race teams, and while they won’t keep your water or oil temperatures down, they will definitely minimize detonation AKA knock.

For those of you who don’t understand knock, one cause of detonation is the accumulation of hot spots in the cylinder or rotor housing. Fuel cools these cylinders, but heat is added to the fuel inherently when upgrading fuel pumps, doing hot laps, or living in a place like Arizona.

How Does Fuel Coolers Work?

Fuel coolers sit between the pump and the fuel rails and route incoming fuel through a cooler before it reaches your combustion chamber resulting in lower temps, less knock, and more power. So make limiting boost and pulled timing a thing of the past opt for consistency with a fuel cooler!

What Is the Difference Between Cool Cans and Fuel Coolers?

Cool cans and fuel coolers serve a similar purpose of cooling the fuel, but they differ in their design and installation. Cool cans are compact, cylindrical containers that are typically installed between the fuel pump and carburetor. They utilize heat exchange technology to dissipate heat from the fuel. On the other hand, fuel coolers are inline devices that are installed in the fuel line itself. They incorporate various cooling mechanisms, such as heat exchangers or fans, to cool the fuel as it passes through the system. Both cool cans and fuel coolers can effectively reduce fuel temperature, but the specific choice depends on your vehicle’s setup and application requirements.

When the BMW M2 hit the market, it sparked controversy over its unconventional styling. Despite the car putting on some weight compared to the previous generation, the new M2 remains the smaller and ‘more chuckable’ M car. With the same chassis and powerplant as the G80 M3 / G82 M4, there are already numerous modifications available. We recently got this BMW here at Vivi Racing HQ to install a Valvetronic Designs Valved Sport Exhaust System, H&R VTF Adjustable Lowering Springs, VR Tuned ECU Tuning Box, and  some RW Carbon Aero pieces! 

We treated this BMW G87 M2 to a Valvetronic Designs Valved Sport Exhaust System, which sounds great coming out of the S58 Twin Turbo Inline 6 engine. Valvetronc Design is an American manufacturer of some of the greatest systems on the market that boast the best of both worlds: soundtrack and performance. There are not many brands out there who can claim to have an exhaust that looks the part, sounds the part, and performs it all the same. The Valvetronic Design exhaust for the G87 produces an aggressively sporty tone with minimal effect on drivability and cabin noise all while looking great and producing impeccable power. We just had a very fun project here at Vivid Racing HQ that is this Porsche 911 991.2 Turbo. We gave it the VR Treatment full of amazing bolt-ons and a bit of carbon pieces. This combination turned the 911 Turbo into a full-blown rocket ship! This car was relatively stock except for a set of KW Club sport coilovers, and made for a perfect platform for a few performance mods.

Let’s get into what exactly we’ve done to this car: we added an Armytrix Valvetronic Exhaust system, a VR Performance Cold Air Intake system along with Diverter Valves and some aero bits.

Our first step was installing an Armytrix Valvetronic Exhaust System, which gives you options to open or close the exhaust valves with a remote controller. When the valves are fully open for maximum flow and power, it creates an exotic tone and allows for higher performance. When the valves are closed, exhaust volume is reduced for a more comfortable drive. 

Let’s dive into Exterior Mods. We outfitted this 991.2 Turbo with some tasteful carbon fiber aero pieces. The first thing we did was adding the DarwinPro GT2RS Style Carbon Fiber Trunk Spoiler and the VR Aero Carbon Diffuser, this combination added serious sauce to the rear of the car. To balance out the thick rear of this 991.2, we added the ParwinPro Front Lip and the Porsche OEM RS Side Skirts. This completes the OEM+ aesthetic that we are looking to achieve.

The pink and white color scheme complete the sporty and aggressive look. When it comes to the BMW G80 M3/G82 M4, opinions have been split, especially regarding the front-end design compared to its older sibling, the F80. I must admit It’s starting to grow on me. The distinct, aggressive style synonymous with BMW’s M models, combined with the powerhouse S58 engine, delivers an enticing blend of both auditory and visual excellence. However, stepping inside a G80/G82/G84, it becomes evident that BMW has left considerable room for improvement. With that in mind, let’s dive into the realm of modifications. Here are the top eight performance upgrades tailored for the BMW G8X M3/M4.

1. CFS Radiators High-Performance Engine Oil Cooler

With many motorsports teams and race enthusiasts now pushing over 800 horsepower, the S58 is seeing oil temperatures well above normal. Once oil temperatures pass a safe limit the G8X will go into limp mode. Needless to say this can ruin a race, track session, or your overall driving fun in general. By keeping the factory mounting location and relative dimensions, the factory ducting and shrouds are all reused with no modifications necessary. The S58 is know for its oil cooler sitting very low. It is right above the front splitter. This means that a small accident could easily damage the oil cooler. In response to that, CSF added a rock guard to keep the cooler safe. You’ve no doubt heard horror stories about an OEM cooling getting punctured and spilling oil all over the road or track. Now you can feel safer and more confident that your oil system is safe from road debris.

5. CSF Radiators High-Performance Front Mount Heat Exchanger

Like many BMWs, the S58 motor has some heat issues under heavy driving conditions. While in stock form, the G8X’s factory cooling system does a decent job keeping up with the cooling demands. While this was true of the car in factory spec, those results changed when the cars were modified and started pushing more power. CSF’s industry-leading reputation and deep knowledge of high-performance BMW cooling systems allowed its engineers to immediately identify the cooling weak spots on the S58 engine. The engine is very similar to the B58 in the A90 Supra and G-Series BMW 40i models. Both feature a liquid-to-air charge cooler manifold paired with a front mount heat exchanger (water radiator). The Heat Exchanger cools the fluid cycling through the charge cooler, dissipating heat from the system.

8. VR Tuned Tuning Box

The 3.0L Twin-Turbo inline-6 S58 that lives in the engine bay of the M3 and M4 G80 was just as stout, if not more so than the B58 it replaced. While the highest numbers we were able to draw out of the stock turbos and this extremely reliable engine will remain top secret, we can proudly say our VR Tuned Tuning Box was able to achieve a peak of 640hp and 559ftlbs of torque while maintaining safe ignition timing and without increasing knock to a dangerous point. Additionally, due to the plug and play nature of the VR Tuned Tuning box, you can gain up to 137hp and 80ftlbs of torque and may even be able to maintain your factory warranty, depending on your vehicle’s point of failure and the dealership which services it.

While the new BMW Engine Computers do have the ability to datalog to identify issues or anomalies in a vehicles performance that would surely reveal ECU tampering, since the VR Tuned Tuning Box is plug and play and can be uninstalled without a trace, it’s safe to say uninstalling the Tuning Box and unplugging the battery for about 10 minutes should be enough to lose any datalogs and allow you to drive to your service center as stock as the day it left the plant. This of course, is just theory and not instruction.

The Mercedes Sprinter van was originally designed to allow contractors and service providers to haul equipment to and from different job sites. This van was extremely popular in Europe because of its size and powerful diesel engine. Since they are primarily sold as empty shells inside, the Sprinter soon became the go to platform for travelers, transportation companies, RVs, and motocross racers wanting to custom outfit their own. When COVID was at its peak, the desire to hit the road and work from wherever was the new dream. So the RV craze went, well, crazy! Taking a combination of the Overland and RV market, saw the explosive growth of the Mercedes Sprinter Overland builds. These builds allowed people to travel to all the great places on and off-road that traditional RVs just couldn’t go to. Equipped with beds, bathrooms, and kitchens, the exterior look and function was equally important. With ladders, awnings, bike racks, and big lights from companies like Baja Designs, Rigid, and others, the last component to make the Van official are the wheels.

VR Forged introduced their 1 piece forged monoblock wheels to the Sprinter Van community in late 2021. Combining the style of our car and truck wheels with a 6 spoke design and beefy ring element, the wheels were built specifically for the Sprinter use. Each VR Forged forging is constructed using a 10,000 ton press to make a strong and pure aluminum monoblock. The Porsche 992 GT3 has been one of the most amazing Project Vehicles we have ever done. Originally delivered in October 2021 from our friends at Chandler Porsche, this was one of the first GT3 cars to land in the USA. After an amazing 2 years of road rallies, mods, and fun, we sold this vehicle which now calls Georgia home. Still making loud noises with the Armytrix titanium exhaust and VR Tuned ECU Flash, the Verus aero kit and Fabspeed wing risers never looked so good in its new environment. Still having the awesome VR Forged x Dymag wheels, the new owner wanted to do some proper tracking time with the GT3. For added safety he installed a Competition Motorsport bolt-in roll bar in paint matched Python Green. He also had the OEM wheels refinished in Aurum Gold color like the factory and set out to make a cool video with Schrenk Media. While the M3/M4 G80 definitely dropped the ball in the front end looks department when compared to it’s F80 older sibling, I admit it’s starting to grow on me. Like a dog grows into its ears, the G80 has split the room in half in terms of aesthetics but I think we can all agree the performance can’t be ignored. So like you, we were excited to see just how much we could get out of the G80, but we just had to wait for our VR Tuned Tuning Box V2 to arrive from Germany.

Once we had hardware in hand, we drained the fuel and ensured we had consistent fuel as we were aiming for the moon initially. However, after this completely factory G80 put down 503hp and 479ftlbs of torque, we thought we didn’t have much room to grow, but we were wrong.

The 3.0L Twin-Turbo inline-6 S58 that lives in the engine bay of the M3 and M4 G80 was just as stout, if not more so than the B58 it replaced. While the highest numbers we were able to draw out of the stock turbos and this extremely reliable engine will remain top secret, we can proudly say our VR Tuned Tuning Box was able to achieve a peak of 640hp and 559ftlbs of torque while maintaining safe ignition timing and without increasing knock to a dangerous point. Additionally, due to the plug and play nature of the VR Tuned Tuning box, you can gain up to 137hp and 80ftlbs of torque and may even be able to maintain your factory warranty, depending on your vehicle’s point of failure and the dealership which services it.

Unlike more invasive tuning methods, we were able to extract this power from the S58 without modifying the ECU’s Timing and Fuel tables directly. That is to say, to the naked eye, the ECU was untouched. However, German engineering, American ingenuity, and some basic EFI logic allow our tuning box to modify the signals sent from the factory sensors to the ECU and allow the ECU to make adjustments based on parameters initially defined by Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (that’s what BMW stands for).

While the new BMW Engine Computers do have the ability to datalog to identify issues or anomalies in a vehicles performance that would surely reveal ECU tampering, since the VR Tuned Tuning Box is plug and play and can be uninstalled without a trace, it’s safe to say uninstalling the Tuning Box and unplugging the battery for about 10 minutes should be enough to lose any datalogs and allow you to drive to your service center as stock as the day it left the plant. This of course, is just theory and not instruction.

In 2022, car enthusiasts all over the United States were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Nissan Z. In the new Z, not 400Z, it seems Nissan answered all of our prayers. Equipped with a 3.0L VR30DDTT Twin Turbo V6 and a 6 speed FS6R31 manual transmission, the new Z34 (Kouki Z34) seemed to fill all the gaps Nissan left in the Zenki Z34 and R35 that left true drivers wanting more. With a power output at an even 400hp (298kw; 406ps) and 350 ftlbs (475 N-m 48 kg-m) of torque, the new Z34 was unlike any of its predecessors and a breath of fresh air in the middle of the ‘Sports Car Electrification Movement’. Nissan then broke some hearts, mine included, when they announced the 420hp, 384ftlb Z34 Nismo would be equipped with a rebadged Mercedes 9G-Tronic automatic transmission manufactured under Jatco as the JR913E and that there would be no manual option for the Nismo Z. Their reasoning: Even with more power, the automatic sport model would be faster in the ¼ mile than a manual Nismo, and they feared consumers would care.

Fast forward to release day, and the reasonably priced Nissan Z saw dealer markups of over $70,000 over MSRP on what could be Nissan’s final true sports car. Somehow, clout and fear of missing out beat common sense and they sold like hotcakes. So much so, that as of the writing of this article, the least expensive USED Nissan Z on the market is being offered at $7,000 above NEW MSRP. Now to bring it all into perspective, if you were an early buyer of a Nissan Z, you’re punching in Audi RS5 Coupe, BMW M4 Competition xDrive, and C8 Corvette territory price-wise, except you likely have cloth seats, less power, and are a good deal slower from 0-60 than your newly priced out competition… and the EFI scientist here at Vivid Racing just can’t let you go out like that.

While we have options for your interior woes, and styling upgrades that make the car look the part of the markup, we were focused on two things and two things only: horsepower and torque… and drivability (I’m aware that’s three things). When this Two-tone Ikazuchi Yellow Tricoat / Super Black Kouki Z34 rolled into our dyno lab, we were impressed. It put down an underrated 405hp and 475ftlbs of torque through the automatic transmission, which was more than we all expected. When it comes to turning the sports car, Porsche Cayenne S into an off-road beast, our very own Ryan McFarlin led by example with his latest upgrades. For his luxury SUV, Ryan upgraded it’s suspensions, wheels, tires and more, and as seen in pictures below which were shot by Derius Aguirre, the upgrades turned the ride into a powerful off-roading machine. For starters, Ryan’s Porsche Cayenne S was lifted of the ground using Eurowise 3 inch Lift Kit, and this ride’s suspension upgrade didn’t end there, as it also had off-road tested Control arms installed for better performance and steering. Apart from steering and handling, the other important upgrade for off-road vehicles is light, so Ryan’s Porsche had a Eurowise Bolt On Light Bar installed as well as Eurowise’s NEW Cayenne 2011-2017 modular roof rack which was modified for lights by Lex Offroad in Mesa.

A vehicle wouldn’t be off-road ready without the proper wheels and tires and Ryan used our very own VR Forged Porsche Cayenne Overland 1pc Monoblock Wheels which guarantees a comfortable ride, attractive appearance and delivers impressive performance. The 2nd Gen. Ford Raptor is an amazing platform that comes stock with some of the most capable parts you can have on an off-road truck right off the lot. This truck is not only well equipped with some superb Fox Suspension, Rigid Lighting, and 35″ tires but houses the Ecoboost D35 Twin-Turbo High-Output V6 potential powerplant of an engine. I say potential powerplant because some enthusiasts find this Raptor to be missing a little giddy-up. While the second-generation Raptor stomps the capabilities of it’s spawn, the first-generation Raptor, there is still something to be desired from Ford’s Off-Road Flagship.

Many companies, such as Hennessy Performance have taken this Raptor to new levels. They introduced their 6×6 Ford Velociraptor, built for Post Melone, that opened up huge opportunities for this truck. We won’t be taking this truck to that level, but we will be installing some budget friendly upgrades that you will instantly be able to feel on your Ford Raptor.

We first wanted to get started with some stock, baseline dyno runs to get a gauge of where this Raptor would be at on our Mustang Dyno before installing one of our upgrades. We ran this truck on 91 octane and were able to get a baseline of: 362 WHP/440 FT/TQ

Mind you, this is our Mustang Dyno and the horsepower output may differ amongst different dynos. But for this occasion, we are using 362 WHP as our stock horsepower before making any modifications.

For this Raptor project we will be installing four simple upgrades.

To start off the project, we are installing our VR Performance Intercooler that vastly improves the performance of the Ford Raptor and F150 trucks with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Being that the 3.5L is turbocharged, upgrading the intercoolers on these vehicles is an extremely important if you want to get the most performance.

Why is that?

As air goes through the turbocharger and compresses, it gets hot very fast. This increase in air temperature causes the oxygen density to drop, resulting in a loss of performance. By replacing the factory OEM intercooler with a larger and more efficient intercooler, the warm charge air becomes much denser and oxygen rich, resulting in more power.

The Factory OEM intercooler on the Raptor and F150 is located behind the front bumper in a location that does not allow adequate air flow. This coupled with its small core size makes it highly susceptible to heat soak, especially when pushing the vehicle hard or just driving in hot environments. The Vivid Racing Intercooler Upgrade kit fixes this by replacing the factory OEM intercooler and relocating it behind the grille with a highly efficient bar and plate aluminum intercooler. Locating the intercooler behind the grille provides not only improved air flow but room for an intercooler core that is over 55% larger than stock.

The Vivid Racing Upgraded Intercooler has integrated aluminum high volume end tanks compared to the OEM intercooler, which uses plastic end tanks.  The aluminum end tanks are designed to improve air flow and help dissipate heat more efficiently.  Each kit comes with mounting brackets and aluminum intercooler piping that has been powder coated black for sleek and durable finish. The factory electronic blow-off valve is retained and kept as a fully closed loop system to keep you going in any condition. The kit also includes all necessary hardware and couplers for a clean installation.

This upgrade is a must have for Ford Raptor and F150 owners who want the most out of their truck or plan to run aftermarket bumpers and accessories as some of these modifications reduce air flow and/or require the factory intercooler to be moved. This intercooler fits beautifully behind the established grille on the Raptor making this not so much a sleeper upgrade if someone knows what their looking for!

For our upgrade we will be installing the VR Performance Cold Air Intake for the Ford Raptor.

A cold air intake kit for the Ford F-150 2.7L or 3.5L EcoBoost is one of the first upgrades you should do to your truck.  The twin turbocharged engine that powers the F-150 and the Raptor will benefit from the improved intake design giving you an overall better driving experience.  The VR Performance cold air intake kit gives your EcoBoost better throttle response, allows the turbochargers to spool up quicker, as well as increase torque along with horsepower throughout the entire RPM range.  As you go through the 10 speed transmission, you will hear the turbochargers spool up as they take in a much larger volume of air.  When the driver is not heavy on the throttle, you can even expect a slight improvement to your MPG.  As tested on a stock 2018 Ford Raptor running 91 octane while using our Mustang Dynamometer, the intake made a peak gain of 10 rear wheel horsepower (rwhp) while maintaining a midrange of 12rwhp.  Torque jumped up 20ft/lbs over stock giving you more power off the line and when you need it most!

Vivid Racing’s intake design and manufacturing is all done here in the USA.  The custom high flow cone filter has a large diameter flange taking in air from 360 degrees around. The box design has been engineered to integrate with the factory air snorkel.  The air filter is sealed off from hot engine air with a rubber gasket that is mounted to the one piece box.  Connecting the air filter to the two turbochargers is a one piece, roto molded intake tube that splits off with a clean seamless merge.  With this design, the VR intake tube flows over 100% more air than the stock intake tube.  The intake is finished off with an integrated sensor mount, Vivid Racing silicone couplers, and required hose clamps.

Why Stock Intake is Weak:

A factory intake box can have restrictions from the stock air filter and intake tubes. Looking at the stock intake of the Ford F-150 EcoBoost, you will notice the corrugated tubes that connect the hard piping to the filter box.  This design can cause turbulence to the air flow.  When the air flow is disrupted, this affects performance as the air speed is slowed down.  While air flow is very important, so is the amount of air that can be sucked into the turbochargers compressors.  The stock intake features a flat panel filter design which is common in most vehicles.  These paper air filters are non-reusable and do not have the best flow or surface area needed to gain performance.

This is a beautiful plug-n-play cold air intake that will aid in some big horsepower gains on this Raptor!

For our next piece in this project, we will be installing the VR Performance – Blow Off Valve Adapter.
This new BOV adapter allows the turbo system to vent 100% out to the atmosphere the unused charge air instead of recirculating it back into the intake system. With a standard bypass valve, air going back into the intake can be turbulent or cause compressor surge slowing the turbo spool up. One of the more popular reasons to have a 100% vent to atmosphere setup is that awesome turbo whoosh sound. The black anodized billet aluminum piece easily installs between the charge pipe and factory bypass valve. VR’s BOV Adapter comes with all necessary hardware for an easy install making for a great upgrade. This little guy improves turbo performance and is a no-brainer for this project!
